Acquiring a first language is an achievement that occurs naturally and unnoticed by the speaker. In many respects, it is essentially complete in children by age three. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly an intellectual achievement. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the scale and nature of this intellectual achievement and to present more recent findings from scientific research on this phenomenon over the past several decades. In the course of this article, an attempt is made to identify key theoretical questions related to "explaining" this mystery. This work lays a theoretical foundation for a theory of first language acquisition.
