Pollution of water by industrial and agricultural runoff represents a serious environmental issue. Magnetoactive composite material based on Fe3O4/aluminosilicate was synthesized from rice-straw hydrolysate and investigated as a magnetically active sorbent for the removal of Mn2+ and Pb2+ ions. The two-step synthesis included precipitation of Fe3O4 from FeCl3/FeCl2 with NH3 and subsequent formation of the composite material. The samples contained 45–47 wt% SiO2, 10.6–21.1 wt% Al2O3 and 32–44 wt% Fe3O4, with specific surface areas of 176.4 and 165.2 m2/g. Dynamic sorption studies showed higher uptake for the sample with the larger specific surface area; an external magnetic field increased Mn2+ sorption but decreased Pb2+ sorption. The results indicate the promise of using magnetoactive sorbents derived from rice-straw waste for wastewater treatment.
