The alkaloid fascaplysin has a wide range of antitumor and antibacterial activity. One important area of research is the synthesis of new fascaplysin derivatives. In this study, we demonstrate a new approach to the targeted introduction of a carboxyl group into the fascaplysin structure. The developed method is based on the preparation of a β-carboline derivative from the methyl ester of the readily available amino acid tryptophan, followed by quaternization to form the methyl ester of 6-carboxyfascaplysin.
