The article reveals the importance of knowledge of English as the world language of communication in various spheres of life. Particular attention is paid to the use of reading English literature in the original as one of the effective methods of independently improving the English language. The richness and diversity of English literature is characterized, including famous representatives of children's and adult fiction. The results of a survey among young readers aged 14-18 are presented, which revealed their high motivation to learn English and interest in certain genres of literature.

Learning a foreign language at non-linguistic universities is associated with a number of psychological difficulties that affect the effectiveness of the educational process. Students often face low motivation, foreign language anxiety, and lack of confidence in their abilities. The aim of the article is to analyze the main psychological barriers to foreign language learning and to identify ways to overcome them. The study employs methods of literature analysis, questionnaires, and observation. The results can be used in foreign language teaching practice in higher education.
